Inspiration vs. Interpretation: Colorful Folk Flower Crown

Photos by: Laura Powers

One of the things I love is designing for a friend or family-member. Victoria is more like a sister than a friend even though we’ve only known each other for about 5 years. She’s the shop’s marketing assistant so you’ve probably read her blogs, seen her Instagram posts, and even talked to her on the phone if you call to order flowers on Valentine’s Day. She’s creative and nontraditional so her and her fiance are eloping, just the two of them in Las Vegas. Luckily for me, Victoria asked me to design for their engagement shoot!

Victoria is Polish and she wanted to honor her heritage at this shoot. She brought me pictures of Polish and Slavic folk art flower crowns. Traditionally, flower crowns were worn by brides in rural Poland ceremonially as a symbol of the rite of passage of marriage. Victoria asked me to design a colorful, fun, modern crown for her to wear and a matching lapel for her fiance, Tim.

For Victoria’s crown we used red and pink spray roses, orange & plum ranunculus, blue delphinium, and green Hellebore. The result looked amazing with her still-life print dress. For Tim, we designed a coordinating lapel piece to go on his jacket—deep burgundy scabiosa tied the chocolate brown leather back to the colorful array of blooms.

Laura Powers photographed this lovely shoot. Take a look at the inspiration vs. the day of photos below; how did we do?
