Whimsical Wildflower Wedding Flowers at a Private Home

Photos by: Amber Fullbright Photography

One truly special part about our line of work is getting to design for family and friends. This Fall, we had the pleasure of designing for our Assistant Designer Olivia’s sister, Sarah. Charles and Sarah’s wedding was extra special because Charles’ family home served as the venue. To top it all off, Julianne of Most Joyful Day coordinated the event and she actually referred Olivia to work with us 4 years ago. Julianne happens to be one of Olivia’s mom’s friends! As the old adage goes, the rest is history and we were so happy to be a part of this event filled with family and friends.

For today’s blog, we’re doing things a bit differently as Olivia designed and set up the majority of Sarah and Charles’ wedding. We interviewed her about the experience of designing for her sister (no pressure.) Read on to find out what she learned along the way.

What was your approach to designing your sister's bouquet?
Olivia: My primary focus was on the color palette and bouquet style. I wanted to make sure I captured Sarah’s preference for a whimsical bouquet with bright and pastel flowers. I made sure to have her inspiration pics with me as I designed. Althea was also there to help me along the way! And since my sister and I share similar tastes in style and color, I knew if I loved it, she would too!

What ingredients did you use and which ingredient is your favorite/favorite to work with?
Olivia: Sarah wanted a bouquet without foliage so I used wax flower to create a sturdy base to start her bouquet.
Then I added dahlias, snap dragons, tulips, ranunculus, larkspur, butterfly ranunculus, delphinium, and stock.
My favorite ingredient to work with are butterfly ranunculus because they add a light and airy feel to bouquets. I love the movement they bring with their multiple blooms per stem. I also love regular ranunculus!

What was your favorite part of the day?
Olivia: My favorite part of the day was showing Sarah her bouquet! I was so excited to see her reaction. I’m so happy I was able to design the bouquet for her!

What was your favorite floral piece of the day outside of the bouquet?
Olivia: I really loved the two arrangements we designed for the ceremony! They were filled with my favorite colors and flowers (vibrant pinks and oranges, ranunculus, tulips, dahlias). I thought they looked great on the pillars and although they were large and full they still had that light and airy look we were going for.

Tell us about the reception designs.
Olivia: For the centerpieces, we used bud vases with tulips, ranunculus, scabiosa, stock, delphinium, and snapdragons in the same shades as the bouquets. For the cake, we went with a simple, whimsical design. We wrapped the stems with floral tape and stuck them directly into the layers to create the effect of them growing out of the cake.

What's one thing you learned about designing for loved ones that you'll take forward with you?
Olivia: I learned to treat them like any other client. Follow the same steps as usual and everything should go smoothly!
